When did you last stop and ask yourself: “Am I really living my life, or am I simply going through the motions?”

It is a simple question, but one that can make us pause.

Most of us are busy! Isn’t it?

We wake up, get ready, go to work, take care of our families, prepare meals, answer emails, complete our responsibilities, scroll through our phones, make plans for tomorrow—and then go to bed.

And the next day, we do it all over again.

There is nothing wrong with having routines or responsibilities. In fact, routines can give our lives structure and stability.

But somewhere between the endless “must-dos”, we can forget the “want-to-dos.”

We can become so focused on getting through life that we forget to actually experience it.

Existing Is Not the Same as Living

Existing means getting through the day. Living means being present in the day.

Existing can look like constantly waiting for the next milestone:

  • “Once I get that promotion, I’ll be happy.”
  • “Once the children grow up, I’ll have more time for myself.”
  • “Once I retire, I’ll travel.”
  • “Once I lose weight, I’ll feel confident.”
  • “Once everything is perfect, I’ll finally enjoy my life.”

But what if life doesn’t begin after everything is perfect?

What if life is happening right now?

We don’t get to choose every circumstance that comes our way. But we can choose how consciously we participate in the life we have.

When Did You Stop Doing the Things You Love?

Think back to your younger self. What did you enjoy?

  • Maybe you loved singing.
  • Maybe you danced.
  • Maybe you painted.
  • Maybe you loved gardening.
  • Maybe you loved cooking.
  • Maybe you loved traveling.
  • Maybe you read books.
  • Maybe you played an instrument.
  • Maybe you spent time with friends, or simply sat outside and watched the sunset.

Then life became busy. Responsibilities increased. And those little things that once brought you joy slowly disappeared from your schedule. Not because you stopped loving them. But because you convinced yourself that you didn’t have time.

Yet joy is not a luxury. Joy is nourishment!

Just as our bodies need nutritious food, movement, rest and connection, our minds and spirits need experiences that make us feel alive.

Your Health Is More Than Your Lab Results

We often think about health in terms of numbers:

  • Blood pressure
  • Blood sugar
  • Cholesterol
  • Weight
  • Vitamin levels
  • Bone density

These things matter. But true wellness is much bigger than a collection of numbers.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I wake up excited about my life?
  • Do I have people I genuinely connect with?
  • Do I make time for things that bring me joy?
  • Do I spend time in nature?
  • Do I laugh?
  • Do I learn?
  • Do I create?
  • Do I move my body because I enjoy feeling strong and alive?
  • Do I make time for myself—not just for everyone else?

These questions can tell us something that a blood test cannot.

Stop Waiting for the “Right Time”

One of the biggest traps we fall into is waiting.

  • We wait for the weekend.
  • We wait for vacation.
  • We wait for retirement.
  • We wait until the children are older.
  • We wait until we have more money.
  • We wait until we lose weight.
  • We wait until we feel confident.
  • We wait until life becomes less busy.

But there will always be another responsibility. Another appointment. Another deadline. Another reason to postpone what matters to us. There may never be a perfectly convenient time!!!!!

So perhaps the question isn’t: “When will I have time to live?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“How can I bring more life into the time I already have?”

Start Small

Living fully doesn’t mean you have to make dramatic changes. You don’t need to quit your job, sell your house or book a round-the-world trip tomorrow.

Sometimes, truly living begins with very small choices.

  • Take a walk without your phone.
  • Call an old friend.
  • Cook something you love.
  • Listen to your favourite music.
  • Sit outside with your morning tea.
  • Watch the sunrise.
  • Plant something.
  • Learn something new.
  • Dance in your kitchen.
  • Laugh with your family.
  • Take yourself out for coffee.
  • Start the hobby you’ve been postponing for ten years.
  • Say yes to an experience that excites you.

And perhaps most importantly: Be present while you’re doing it!

Life Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Beautiful

We often imagine that a happy life is one without problems. But that’s not reality. Life will always contain challenges, disappointments, losses, uncertainty and change. Living fully doesn’t mean avoiding these experiences. It means not allowing them to steal every beautiful moment from us.

  • There can be sadness and gratitude!
  • There can be uncertainty and hope!
  • There can be challenges and joy!
  • We can acknowledge what is difficult while still appreciating what is beautiful.

That is part of living consciously.

A Simple Life Audit

Today, take five quiet minutes and ask yourself:

1. What currently gives me energy?

2. What consistently drains me?

3. What have I been postponing?

4. What did I once love doing that I’ve stopped doing?

5. Who makes me feel connected and alive?

6. What is one experience I want to have this year?

7. If nothing changed in my life for the next five years, would I be happy with that?

That last question can be particularly powerful. Because sometimes we don’t need a completely new life. We simply need to start living our existing life more consciously.

Don’t Just Add Years to Your Life! Add Life to Your Years!

Growing older is inevitable. But growing older doesn’t mean becoming less curious, less adventurous or less joyful. In fact, every stage of life can bring new opportunities to learn, explore, connect and grow.

From my personal experience….Perhaps this is especially important as we move through midlife and beyond.

We may spend decades taking care of everyone else.

Then one day we realize:

“What about me?”

That isn’t selfish. It is necessary. Taking care of yourself, pursuing your interests, nurturing relationships, protecting your health and creating meaningful experiences are all part of a well-lived life.

So, are you truly living or just existing?

Maybe today is a good day to stop. Take a breath. Look around. Appreciate where you are.

And then ask yourself:

“What is one thing I can do today that makes me feel more alive?”

  • Don’t wait for Monday.
  • Don’t wait for the new year.
  • Don’t wait for retirement.
  • Don’t wait for everything to be perfect.
  • Life is not waiting for you somewhere in the future.
  • Life is happening right now.

And perhaps the greatest form of wellness is learning to be fully present for it.

If this message resonates with you, I invite you to watch my video “Are You Truly Living or Just Existing?” and take a few moments to reflect on what living a meaningful, healthy and fulfilling life means to you.

Your longevity matters. But so does how you live those years

Don’t just exist. Live. 🌿
