Over the past few weeks, I found myself dealing with something I hadn’t experienced in years—a persistent runny nose, frequent sneezing, and a scratchy throat. As an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultant and Holistic Nutritionist, my first instinct was not to suppress the symptoms but to ask a deeper question:

“What is my body trying to tell me?”

I began reflecting on my daily habits, diet, sleep patterns, stress levels, and the changing season. Then another thought crossed my mind:

Could my Perimenopausal stage of life be making me more susceptible to allergies?

The answer, according to Ayurveda, is yes.

Understanding Allergies Through the Ayurvedic Lens

In Ayurveda, allergies are not viewed as an isolated problem. Instead, they are considered a sign that the body’s internal balance has been disturbed.

When the digestive fire (Agni) becomes weak, undigested metabolic waste (Ama) begins to accumulate. This Ama can circulate through the body and trigger exaggerated responses to substances that may not have bothered us before.

At the same time, seasonal changes can aggravate specific doshas.

During spring and early summer, accumulated Kapha from winter begins to melt and circulate, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Runny nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Excess mucus
  • Sneezing
  • Watery eyes

When Pitta joins the picture, inflammation can develop, resulting in:

  • Scratchy throat
  • Burning sensations
  • Red eyes
  • Irritation

The Menopause Connection

Menopause is a major transition in a woman’s life. Ayurveda recognizes this phase as a time when the body naturally undergoes hormonal, emotional, and physiological shifts.

As estrogen levels fluctuate and gradually decline, many women notice changes they never experienced before:

  • Increased sensitivity to environmental triggers
  • Dryness of the nasal passages and throat
  • Changes in immune function
  • Heightened inflammatory responses

From an Ayurvedic perspective, menopause is often associated with increasing Vata dosha. When Vata becomes aggravated, it can weaken resilience and create instability within the body’s systems.

This means that allergies may appear more intensely, even if you have been symptom-free for years.

In my own case, I realized that several factors had quietly come together:

  • Seasonal pollen levels were high.
  • The weather was fluctuating between warm and cool.
  • I had been spending more time outdoors.
  • Menopausal changes may have reduced my tolerance to environmental allergens.

Sometimes it isn’t one thing we did “wrong.” It is simply the cumulative effect of internal and external changes.

Ayurvedic Strategies for Managing Allergies Naturally

1. Support Your Digestive Fire (Agni)

A strong digestive system is the foundation of health in Ayurveda.

Choose:

  • Warm cooked meals
  • Light seasonal vegetables
  • Ginger tea
  • Warm water throughout the day

Reduce:

  • Cold drinks
  • Excess dairy
  • Processed foods
  • Heavy desserts

2. Reduce Ama Formation

Simple dietary choices can help reduce toxic accumulation.

Try:

  • Eating only when hungry
  • Avoiding overeating
  • Taking a gentle digestive spice blend with cumin, coriander, and fennel

3. Use Nasya Oil

Applying a few drops of warm sesame-based Nasya oil in the nostrils can help lubricate nasal passages and create a protective barrier against airborne irritants.

This practice is especially valuable during dry, windy, and pollen-heavy seasons.

4. Sip Herbal Teas

Many herbs can support respiratory comfort and immune balance:

  • Tulsi (Holy Basil)
  • Ginger
  • Licorice root
  • Turmeric

A warm cup of herbal tea can soothe an irritated throat while supporting the body’s natural defenses.

5. Prioritize Rest and Stress Management

Stress can weaken immunity and increase inflammatory responses.

Daily practices such as:

  • Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Deep breathing
  • Walking in nature

can help restore balance and resilience.

6. Follow Seasonal Living Principles

Ayurveda teaches us that health depends on living in harmony with nature.

As seasons change, our diet and lifestyle should change as well.

Eating seasonally, dressing appropriately, and adjusting routines according to the weather can significantly reduce seasonal discomfort.

My Biggest Takeaway

This experience reminded me that health is never static.

Even when we have followed healthy habits for years, life stages such as menopause can alter how our bodies respond to the environment.

Rather than viewing symptoms as an inconvenience, Ayurveda encourages us to see them as valuable feedback.

My runny nose and scratchy throat became an opportunity to pause, observe, and reconnect with the fundamental principles of balance.

Perhaps the question is not:

“What did I do wrong?”

But rather:

“What is my body asking for right now?”

When we approach symptoms with curiosity instead of frustration, we often discover the wisdom our bodies have been trying to share all along.

If you feel your body has been trying to tell you something lately, perhaps this is the perfect opportunity to pause, reflect, and learn how to better support your health naturally.

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the knowledge and confidence to understand our bodies and make informed choices that support long-term wellness.
